1999 NAVVF Reunion in Hartford, Connecticut
We will be staying at the elegant HARTFORD is a gateway to many New England and New York destinations. It is within 2 1/2 hours by auto from Boston, New York City, The Hudson River Valley, The Catskills of New York, The Berkshires in Massachusetts and the rest of New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island). ACCESSIBILITY: Bradley International Airport is served by 19 commercial carriers, with "same plane" Service to 75 United States and Canadian cities. Hartford lies at the crossroads of four newly expanded major US Interstates. Hartford is part of Amtrak's nationwide rail service. ATTRACTIONS in TOWN and NEARBY: Hartford boasts more sites on the National Register of Historic Place that any other region except New Orleans - Mark Twain House, Old State House, Wadsworth Atheneum (first public art museum in the United States), Harriet Beecher Stowe Homestead, and many other historic homes. Nearby - New England Air Museum, Mystic Seaport, Foxwoods Casino, Old Sturbridge Village, Basketball Hall of Fame, Goodspeed Opera, Car Ferries to Nantucket,Martha's Vineyard, and Long Island, etc. The following are some activities that are scheduled for the upcoming NAVVF Reunion. Old Sturbridge Village New England's largest outdoor history museum allows the visitor to experience life in a rural community of the 1830's. Nestled on more than 200 acres of rolling hills and farmland, it preserves America's past in the workshops, kitchens, and meeting houses that were moved from their original sites to recreate a typical New England town. Visitors interact with costumed staff - blacksmiths at their forges, housewives cooking and weaving, coopers shaving staves for buckets, potters moulding clay, and farmers with their animals on the working farm. Old Mystic Seaport August 6, 10 AM - 4 PM A recreated whaling village with historic houses, shops and trade buildings that allows you to experience life in a seaport town during the age of sail. Smell the salt air as you explore the last of the wooden whaling ships, The Charles W. Morgan. Ships models, scrimshaw, figureheads, small boats and other relics trace the history of maritime activities. There is an operating shipyard where wooden sailing vessels are restored or recreated. (A recreation of the slave ship Amistad is being built here). Costumed docents and gorgeous seaside views contribute to a unique nautical ambiance. Foxwoods Resort Casino August 6, 5 PM,-10 PM Foxwoods is the largest casino in the U.S. Magnificent architecture - extensive gambling facilities - over twenty restaurants (!), etc. Here's your chance to pay for your trip (but don't count on it). New England abounds with interesting historic sites, spectacular scenery, charming Bed & Breakfasts, quaint inns, and outstanding regional restaurants.
