From Arlene Van Valkenburg (Br 3?)"The only time I met Jean and Bob Van Valkenburgh was at the 1995 NAVVF Reunion in Fishkill, which I attended because I had just begun to investigate my father's family about which I knew almost nothing. A few minutes over tea and coffee was the only time Jean and I ever spent together. After I began to research at various libraries in New York City, I would often call Jean to ask questions or tell her something interesting I had found. At some point she came to mean much more to me than someone with whom I could discuss genealogy she had become a good friend. We talked often over the past few years, even during her difficult times. Despite her own pain, she always made me laugh and gave me courage when I needed it. The NAVVF has lost not only Jean, her wonderful personality and dedication to the cause of helping all of us VVs find our place in the family, but a women whose spirit should be an inspiration to all, as it was to me. I will always treasure our friendship, short though it was. She taught me genealogy but oh, so much more - courage and hope." |
