President’s Message Holly |

I was elected your President at the Indianapolis Reunion. It was a wonderful occasion and those of us who were there enjoyed the gracious hospitality of ALL the Martins! Glenna did a fabulous job of organizing and directing her crew – every member of her descendant family was there, with the exception of one teen-age grandson. Thank you so much, all the Martins (Br 6). We are sharing pictures from the Reunion in this issue of News Notes, thanks to our digital photographer, Lee Lammert. He is also the host for our website and my eldest son. I would like you to know that Van Valkenburgh is my birth name. I am, in fact, named after my father, Horace, who was born in China, where my grandparents were teaching missionaries. His name there was pronounced "Hah-li" which became Americanized to "Holly" when they returned to the States. I am the first child of my parents and so was named Holly after my father and Viola after my mother, Viola Frieda Gerfe. My brother was baptized Horace Bulle Van Valkenburgh IV and we called him "Skippy" when he was little, "Skipper" later on and now "Skip". He will be the host of the 2001 Reunion in Denver. I have been a member of NAVVF since 1990, when my father presented me, and my siblings, with an NAVVF membership as a Christmas gift. Since 1991 I have been the editor of News Notes and for the past three years have also published it. I will continue to edit News Notes; Duane and Valetta Van Valkenburg will publish it. Duane is one of our new Board members, along with Rick Van Valkenburg who is our webmaster and also maintains our membership database. Our past president, Mary E. Van Valkenburgh, gave an absolutely wonderful talk at our Business Meeting in Indianapolis. She has graciously consented to allow me to print it. Mary instigated "The Three M's": Management, Money and Members, and I intend to continue, with an emphasis on the Membership aspect. As you know, the NAVVF dues year begins in September. Included in this issue of News Notes is the annual dues notice with a second form for a gift membership. Please duplicate them if you need more than one.
Present a family member with a special birthday or Christmas or "just because" gift. My father's gift led to my being elected your President - where will your gift lead? | |
