HARRY HOWARD VAN VALKENBURG - Article from Book

In an early period of Klamath County's history, Harry Howard Van Valkenburg
became identified with the section between Linkville and Keno, having arrived
here when a lad of 15 with his parents in 1881. Born in Rockford, IL March 23, 1866, he was the son of George and Josephine (Billick) Van
Valkenburg. His father was also a native of Rockford, and noted for his
activities in the Civil War, for as a Lieutenant of the 74th IL Infantry,
he served out the first enlistment and was wounded five times. His demise
occurred at Pecatonica, II in 1867. The mother was born near Racine, WI Mar
15,1845, and married Lieutenant Van Valkenburg in IL in 1861. Following his
death she moved to IA where, in Nov 1871, she married Ky Taylor, a farmer of
that State. They located near Klamath Falls (Linkville) in 1882 and later Mr Taylor opened a barber shop on Main St in Linkville, which he operated for many years. Mrs Taylor took a great interest in community affairs of that early day and was a charter menber of Aloha Chapter No 61, Order of Eastern Star. She passed away in Klamath Falls on March 24, 1912.

Harry Howard Van Valkenburg attended school in IA and the Willamette Valley
and early in life started working for the ranchers on the outskirts of
Linkville. When about 25 years old he purchased a general store and jewelry
business in town and also operated a stage office for two lines, from Ager to
Lakeview and Klamath Falls to Ashland, OR. He had purchased a half
interest in the telegraph system and operated the first telephone system in
Klamath Falls. After 12 years of this strenuous life, Mr VV purchased the
ranch where the Weyerhaeuser mill now stands, 1400 acres in one parcel, where
he ran 600 head of beef cattle. The cattle were driven to Montague and
Gazelle. Oft-times hardships were endured during these early days and Mr VV
recalls the vicissitudes of the Winter of 1889-90 when the snow was 3 1/2 deep in the streets and great numbers of stock were lost during the Winter. He was one of the first ranchers to raise wheat and barley in this section, and he still operates a large ranch 7 miles out of Klamath Falls and another near Keno. The wedding of Harry Howard VV and Emma McIlmoil was solemnized in Klamath Falls on Nov 14, 1897. She is a native of Sutter Co, CA, born Apr
15, 1875, the daughter of Rufus Hiram and Eliza Bell McIlmoil, early pioneers
of that county. Mrs VV arrived in Klamath Falls in 1889 and attended school
here. Throughout the years she had taken an active interest in women's
organizations and in a member of Aloha Chapter No 61, Order of Eastern Star.
Her father was born Aug 8, 1848 in So Dorchester, Province of Ontario, Canada, the son of John McIlmoil, who was born in Sackets Harbor, Canada Apr 20, 1826. After living in Waterloo, Iowa, the McIlmoil family started west on May 3, 1862, in a covered wagon drawn by oxen and settled in Sutter Co, CA
engaging in farming and dairying there and at Phoenix, Ariz. Rufus McIlmoil
married in Sutter Co May 28 1873, and his death occurred in Los Angeles on Jul 21, 1921. Mrs McIlmoil was born 27 july 1856 and died in Sutter Co on Feb 7,1879.

Mr VV gives political allegiance to the Republican Party and is a prominent
member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star and the Shriners. At
one time he served as County Treasurer for Klamath Co for 6 yrs and in many
ways has shown his deep interest in civic and county affairs. He was the first farmer to install an electrical irrigation system here, pumping from the Klamath River by means of electricity purchased from the Kerns Brothers, a utility company who later sold to Copco. Mr and Mrs VV are now living retired in Ashland, OR, enjoying the fruits of their strenuous labors. Being so familiar with the development and upbuilding of Klamath Co, they still retain a ward interest in all things concerning it and count its residents as their friends.
